The Cloudcast #181 - Investigating the ELK Stack

Topic 1 - You’ve been at ElasticSearch for about 6 months, and prior to that you were at Redhat, leading the Fedora Project. Tell us about your background and how you got engaged in these larger open source programs.

Topic 2 - At it’s core, what does ElasticSearch do? What are some of the well-known applications that are powered by ElasticSearch?

Topic 3 - ElasticSearch (the company) says that they like to be “around people that are engaged with data”. You’re an Ops Evangelists, but you have Developer Programs too. Do you care where this is application-centric data or operations-centric data?

Topic 4 - Data is a complicated space, especially with distributed systems. We often hear of ElasticSearch along with this “stack” called ELK (ElasticSearch, Logstash, Kibana). How do those pieces fit together, and what else do they typically interact with for an Apps team or Ops team?

Topic 5 - How difficult was it to shift from the Linux communities to more of the Data or Data Science communities?

Topic 6 - Next week is the Elastic{ON} conference. What are the big things you expect to be discussed? Will it be more technology-centric, or trend/experience-centric?

Topic 7 - What are some of the cool trends or tips/tricks that you’re seeing within your Ops community that’s helping them stay ahead of the pace of new apps and business expectations?
