The Cloudcast #184 - Streaming Analytics for Distributed Applications
Projects of the Week - None this week
- SignalFx Website - https://signalfx.com/
- SignalFx REST API - https://support.signalfx.com/hc/en-us/articles/201270489
- TheNewStack covers SignalFx launch - http://thenewstack.io/signalfx-a-saas-to-monitor-apps-at-any-scale/
Topic 1 - Came out of Stealth recently (3/12), Give a quick overview of the company and the problem you are trying to solve… Given what SignalFx offers, it’s important to understand the people behind it. Let’s start with the background of the team - lots of large, webscale, distributed system background. [how much is “productizing lessons learned”?; how much is “the will be different in 5yrs”?]
Topic 2 - What does streaming analytics mean? Why do companies care about getting analytics faster? Why build an analytics engine to solve a monitoring problem?
Topic 3 - You mention (intro video) that you’re a company that builds services for distributed systems, which are run by product teams, not IT. You were previously at VMware. Can you talk about the different mindset those product teams have vs. IT teams, especially how SignalFx takes their ideas and feedback?
Topic 4 - Walk us through how your customers interact with your service? Where do metrics come from (app, message queue, etc)? How do you secure that API interaction? How are metrics different from logs or events?
Topic 5 - In the same vein as the shift from IT to the Product Groups, your co-founder mentions that Developers are closer to production than ever. What does that mean to the evolution of tools and overall psyche of application developers?

The Cloudcast #137 - APIs and Sharing Files
This podcast all came about because of the Krispy Kreme Challenge this year. The Cloudcast participated and so did the Raleigh Citrix Sharefile folks. So, this podcast is brought to you once again by donuts.
Topic 1 - Let’s start at the start. I’m a Citrix employee and I use ShareFile everyday. It has become one of those tools that I can’t live without now in this age of sharing files both internally and externally between organizations. If I had to describe it to people, is it fair to call it “Enterprise Dropbox?” How do you explain both Enterprise and Cloud File Sharing to others? What makes ShareFile different than Dropbox?
Topic 2 - Both Box and Dropbox received a ton of funding recently, but we are a few years in and there doesn’t seem to be a clear “winner” in this space. Why hasn’t anybody established themselves as the majority leader in this space? What are the features needed/requested?
Topic 3 - You recently wrote a blog on V3 of the ShareFile API (link in show notes). Tell us about that. You mention REST based API on JSON, oAuth for authentication, and the ability to capture metrics to better understand workflows. Why is that valuable? Are you looking for developers to add ShareFile integration into their applications?
Topic 4 - We are a few years into the BYOD trend. People are finally starting to think of the cloud as access your data, anywhere, any device. How challenging is it for you to make data available on multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, IOS, Android). Have we moved beyond people wanting Windows on their iPad so they can access files? Have the usage patterns changed over time?

The Cloudcast #128 - Does Open Source Redefine the Cloud Supply Chain
Topic 1 - Ask about branching out beyond reselling - hosting/Cloud; DevOps stuff like Colin does; mobile app development

Topic 3 - What technology or business trends do you see earlier than the vendors or media?
Topic 4 - How aggressive are the cloud providers pursuing the channel partners?
Topic 5 - What do you wish the vendors would change about interacting with channels?

The Cloudcast #124 - Cloud Operations
Topic 1 - VMTurbo isn’t your first go round creating products and companies in this space. Prior to VMTurbo, you created SMARTS which was acquired by EMC. What made you decide to start over and create something from the ground up a second time?
Topic 2 - What common problems are you seeing today? Do you see different problems based on Enterprise vs. SMB? SP’s? What is your view of this space?
Topic 3 - Are your products Open Source (not from what I could tell)? Has Open Source Software and the increasing scopes of projects/Products in OpenStack/CloudStack/vCloud affecting how you see approaches to operations of clouds?
Topic 4 - What CMP (cloud management platform) characteristics do you see the most that are driving adoption of additional management products? Where are the holes today? Monitoring, Multi-Tenancy, Compliance and Security, Application Level Management?
Topic 5 - How do most of your customers get started today? What challenges do they tackle first? Do they hit the low hanging fruit? Do they attack the big issues?
Topic 6 - Do you get many requests for deep API Integration for DevOps or integration with public clouds? Where do you think the private cloud industry will go in 2014?

Top 100 Cloud Computing Experts on The Cloudcast
This past week, both Aaron Delp (@aarondelp) and Brian Gracely (@bgracely) were named to the "Top 100 Cloud Computing Experts on Twitter" list. A quick scan of the list reveals that 20% have been guests on The Cloudcast over the last two years, with many others that hopefully will be on very soon (lots of scheduling challenges to overcome). We consider ourselves very lucky to have created a platform that allows us to engage with many of the experts in our industry. As we soon move beyond Eps.100 and into our third year, we promise to focus not only on the thought-leaders, but also on many of the people doing amazing things behind the scenes (eg. operators and software developers) at the most innovative cloud computing companies.
NOTE: Many other guests of the show were mentioned in the comments section of the Top 100 list.
